The Silver Fez

December 13th, 2009 by Margie

Catch this wonderful documentary by Lloyd Ross at the Labia. It is about the Cape Malay Choirs – The Continentals, in particular – in the run up to the Choir Competition held each year in Cape Town in March. It is funny and poignant and gives an intimate glimpse into an aspect of Cape Town culture that many of us see but few really know.

Thanks for the heads up on this fantastic film, Margie. I saw a view of the city that was totally new to me. The music is wonderful too - a choral style that gave me goosebumps. I'm planning to attend this year's choir festival.

I thoroughly recommend this movie, still on at the Labia:http://www.labia.co.za/current/reviews.htm#silverfez

The Silver Fez is great, truly. And does make you see and especially hear Cape Town in a different way! I so wanted the underdogs to win! There is a big Iziko exhibition coming on the Klopse and these choirs - so Lloyd Ross and Joelle Chesselet are busy shooting now - friends of mine that I'm hanging out with on holiday - so I have been hearing lots of stories about the build up to the choir festival. I especially loved those Nederlands liedjies...
